JOB SUMMARY: The incumbent is accountable to the Optometrist and the Department Manager. Performs preliminary interviews, exams and procedures for the Vision department.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs preliminary interviews, exams and procedures for the Vision Center which include:
  • Visual acuity; distance and near; aided and unaided
  • Color vision
  • Stereopsis
  • Pupillary measurements
  • Tonometry
  • Visual field testing
  • Patient preparation for: Dilation and Fundus photography
  • Keratometry
  • Prepares eye/medical history and completes patient file with all necessary information.
  • Dispenses Ophthalmic (Contact Lenses)
  • Orders contact lenses as prescribed
  • Provide client teaching on insertion, removal and hygiene for lenses.
  • Polish PMMA lenses
  • Follow up consultations with patients.
  • Dispenses Ophthalmic (Eyewear)
  • Explains technique and emphasis of eyewear styles.
  • Assist clients with selection and care of eyewear
  • Orders, ships, inspects and verifies all eyewear
  • Order, purchase, stock and inventory eyewear
  • Receive all sales representatives
  • Dispense and adjusts eyewear
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient medical history.
  • Performs any other related duties as instructed by Optometrist and Department Manager.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS: Performance will be evaluated by the Optometrist Assistant/Department Manager annually wherein a satisfactory overall rating is considered a minimum acceptable level of performance.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

  • Must adhere to safety policies and procedures.
  • Must receive Safety and Hazardous Communication training annually.
  • Must exercise universal precautions and comply with safety standards and procedures.
  • Knowledgeable of OSHA and CLIA requirements to assure compliance.

PRIVACY RULE COMPLIANCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Adheres to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA Privacy Rule) policies and procedures.
  • Must successfully complete Privacy Rule compliance training annually or as revisions are made to the policies and procedures.
  • Must comply with Privacy Rule guidelines by learning to protect FPHC patient’s medical privacy.
  • Must comply with Privacy Rule guidelines by appropriately maintaining our patient information in compliance with national standards.
  • Must comply with Privacy Rule guidelines by providing appropriate security of FPHC patient records

PROTECTED HEALTH INFORMATION (PHI) ACCESS -UNRESTRICTED/ RESTRICTED- For purposes of HIPAA Compliance there are 4 workforce categories, which define the level of access to PHI that is granted to the incumbent. This position is classified under PRIMARY PROVIDERS and therefore granted UNRESTRICTED access- for the purpose of providing patient care. RESTRICTED access- for other uses and disclosures, to be defined according to workforce member’s specific job duties. Use and disclosure must be in accordance with applicable privacy policies and procedures.

Qualifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: High school graduate or GED equivalent with two or more years work experience in an optometry office or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides preferred knowledge, skills and abilities.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Computer literate and ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to communicate clearly to patients and staff. Requires excellent interpersonal skills and must maintain professional working relations with staff and public.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS: CPO preferred

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS: English as first language preferred. Bilingual/bicultural will be considered.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS

  • Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity.
  • Requires the ability to distinguish letters and symbols.
  • Requires the use of office equipment, such as computer terminals, fax machine, multi-line telephone, etc.
  • Work is stressful in nature. Must be able to handle stressful situations appropriately.
  • Work is sedentary in nature, however, some standing, stooping, bending, lifting, carrying and walking is required.
  • Work is varied in nature and requires attention to detail. Must be accurate in all functions
