Maintenance Engineer I - Maintenance - Baldwin County Sheriff's Office

Position Description Perform work involving the skills of two or more maintenance or craft occupations to keep machines, mechanical equipment, or the structure of an establishment in repair. Duties may involve pipe fitting; insulating; welding; machining; carpentry; repairing electrical or mechanical equipment; installing, aligning, and balancing new equipment; and repairing buildings, floors, or stairs. Ability to work overtime and respond to service calls during non-standard work hours.
Other duties as required. Successful applicants must pass a criminal background check and will be subject to a pre-employment drug screen. WORKING CONDITIONS Maintenance Engineer I positions involve exposure to and require the employee to function in the presence of the following: Inclement weather, to include extreme heat/cold, rain, etc.
Light conditions associated with day and night Travel throughout the county to various Sheriff's Office locations Working inside the Baldwin County Corrections Center Works with and in-close proximity to inmates Essential Job Functions Repair or replace defective equipment parts using hand tools and power tools and reassemble equipment. Perform routine preventive maintenance to ensure that machines continue to run smoothly, building systems operate efficiently, and the physical condition of buildings does not deteriorate. Inspect drives, motors, and belts, check fluid levels, replace filters, and perform other maintenance actions, following checklists.
Use tools ranging from common hand and power tools, such as hammers, hoists, saws, drills, and wrenches, to precision measuring instruments and electrical and electronic testing devices. Assemble, install and/or repair wiring, electrical and electronic components, pipe systems and plumbing, machinery, and equipment. Inspect, operate, and test machinery and equipment in order to diagnose machine malfunctions.
Clean and lubricate shafts, bearings, gears, and other parts of machinery. Dismantle devices to gain access to and remove defective parts, using hoists, cranes, hand tools, and power tools. Inspecting equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects.
Servicing, repairing, adjusting, and testing machines, devices, moving parts, and equipment that operate primarily on the basis mechanical (not electric) principles. Running, maneuvering, navigating, or driving vehicles or mechanized equipment, such as forklifts, passenger vehicles, aircraft, or watercraft. Performing physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.
Using hands and arms in handling, installing, positioning, and moving materials, and manipulating things. Ability to work overtime and respond to service calls during non-standard work hours. PHYSICAL DEMANDS The work is generally medium work exerting up to 30 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently.
Activities could occasionally require heavy to very heavy work, exerting up to 100 or more pounds of force. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: Possess sufficient body strength in order to perform normal duties of the position Crouching: Bending the body downwards and forward by bending leg and spine Dexterity: Primarily with fingers and in picking, pinching, or typing Grasping: Applying pressure with the whole hand Handling: Picking, holding or otherwise working with the whole hand Lifting: Ability to lift and move objects Reaching: Ability to frequently extend hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction. Mental Acuity: Ability to make rational decisions Repetitive Motion: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands and/or fingers Speaking/Talking: Ability to communicate clearly, accurately, and concisely through speech Hearing: Ability to hear and understand at normal speaking levels with or without correction Visual Acuity: Ability to perform activities such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures, transcribing, viewing a computer screen/terminal; and /or extensive reading, with or without correction Walking: ability to move about on foot to accomplish tasks or moving from one work site to another Education and Experience Required: Valid Driver's License and good driving history; criminal background check authorization required, pre-employment drug screening and physical required.
Preferred: Minimum one-year building maintenance experience or building/construction experience; HVAC, Electrical Plumbing, Welding, Mechanical and Carpentry experience; Experience in a supervised security facility; two-year or technical degree in related field Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair and maintenance. Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of houses, buildings, or other structures such as highways and roads. Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions.
Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition and grammar, arithmetic and modern office practices and procedures Skill in the use of a basic computer programs and keyboarding to include Outlook, the maintenance order request system and various other office equipment such as phones, scanners, printers, and copiers Performing routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed. Repairing and troubleshooting machines or systems using the needed tools. Installing equipment, machines, wiring, or programs to meet specifications.
Watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly. The ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects. Ability to compose effective and accurate correspondence Ability to deal with non-routine matters Ability to complete complex work with minimal instructions, keep records and reference files, assemble, and organize data Ability to meet and deal with the public in an effective and courteous manner Ability to exhibit a high degree of loyalty and integrity as a trusted confidant of the unit Ability to assume responsibility and execute the supervisor's orders and instructions Ability to add, subtract, multiply, or divide quickly and correctly Ability to read, write, and speak and interpret the English language Ability to concentrate on a task over a period of time without being distracted Ability to work a flexible schedule as needed.
